Bugesera International Airport to open in 2027, transforming Rwanda’s aviation future
Construction of Rwanda’s new Bugesera International Airport is accelerating, with Phase 1 expected to be completed by 2027 and full operations beginning in 2028. The airport will initially handle 7 million passengers annually, expanding to 14 million by 2032.
The $2 billion project is a joint venture between the Government of Rwanda and Qatar Airways, which holds a 60% stake. The airport is being built on 900 hectares in Bugesera District, south of Kigali.
4.5 km of runways, capable of handling large aircraft like the Airbus A380 and Boeing 747, even under extreme heat or heavy cargo loads
A 13-hectare terminal building with 14 covered jet bridges
Advanced Baggage Handling Systems capable of screening up to 1,062 transit bags and 600 departure bags simultaneously
A cargo zone spanning 26,550 m², designed to process 150,000 tons of freight annually
VIP Facilities and Safety Infrastructure
The airport will include:
A two-story presidential lounge covering 6,590 m², with capacity for 200 VIP guests. A 56-meter control tower with seven levels
Fire and rescue stations across 3,200 m², with four emergency vehicle bays. Police and anti-terror units housed in dedicated buildings totaling 5,200 m²
The project will create over 6,000 jobs and stimulate economic growth in surrounding communities. According to Jules Ndenga, CEO of Rwanda Airports Company:
“Together with Qatar, Rwanda is investing nearly $2 billion to build a world-class airport that will serve both air and ground operations—and generate national revenue.”
Bugesera Airport positions Rwanda as a future aviation hub for East Africa, supporting its Vision 2050 goals and expanding connectivity across the continent.
