Tensions escalated on Thursday, October 30, 2025, at the Namanga border town, a key crossing point between Kenya and Tanzania as unrest from Tanzania’s disputed elections spilled across the border. Youth on the Kenyan side were seen riding motorbikes toward the border, prompting a heavy police presence.

Videos circulating online showed protesters burning tyres and chanting slogans, with one demonstrator shouting, “Leave us alone, focus on Tanzania.”

The unrest follows widespread demonstrations in major Tanzanian cities that began on Wednesday, October 29, during the country’s presidential election. Incumbent President Samia Suluhu is reportedly heading for a landslide victory, while her main challenger, Tundu Lissu, remains in detention. His party has boycotted the polls, citing unfair conditions.

In response to the protests, Tanzanian authorities imposed a 6 PM curfew on Wednesday in an attempt to restore order.

Several journalists attempting to cross into Tanzania to cover the elections were denied entry, with some reporting little to no internet access in Namanga—even while still on Kenyan soil. The information blackout has raised concerns about press freedom and transparency during the electoral process.

Kenya’s Interior Principal Secretary Raymond Omollo addressed the situation from Mombasa, urging Kenyans not to join the protests:

“As a country, we have laws and regulations on demonstrations. Anyone who wants to protest must follow the law. Don’t take the law into your own hands.”

He added that border officers are on standby to manage any disruptions and ensure public safety.

Shops and businesses near the Namanga border have been forced to close due to the unrest. Meanwhile, Tanzanian youth vow to continue protesting until the election results are nullified.
