Rwamagana District shuts down Agahebuzo Drinks Processing for using unsafe ingredients like chili and tobacco in alcohol production.

Authorities in Rwamagana District have shut down Agahebuzo Drinks Processing, a local alcohol manufacturer, after discovering it was producing beverages using unauthorized and potentially harmful ingredients including chili powder, dried herbs (amajyane), and tobacco.

The factory, located in Nsinda Cell, Muhazi Sector, was officially closed on November 4, 2025, following a joint inspection by:
– Local government officials
– Security agencies
– Rwanda FDA (Food and Drugs Authority)

During the inspection, authorities uncovered:
– 64 boxes of baking yeast being misused for alcohol fermentation
– 50 kilograms of ground chili
– Hidden sacks of dried herbs
– Alcohol stock worth over 16 million Rwandan francs, ready for market distribution

The factory had been licensed to produce beverages from bananas and pineapples, but none of those ingredients were found on-site.

District Mayor Speaks Out

Radjab Mbonyumuvunyi, Mayor of Rwamagana, stated:

“They were authorized to produce drinks from bananas and pineapples, but we found they were using completely different and unapproved materials. That’s why we decided to shut them down.”

The decision reflects Rwanda’s strict stance on food safety and consumer protection, especially in the beverage industry.

Several factory workers were detained by security forces, while the factory owner, Muzarendo Raphael, is currently on the run. Authorities have launched a search to bring him in for questioning.

This case highlights the importance of:

It also sends a clear message to other manufacturers: cutting corners on safety will not be tolerated.
