Photos: Uganda bus collision kills over 60 on Kampala–Gulu highway
In the early hours of Wednesday, October 22, 2025, a catastrophic road accident on the Kampala–Gulu highway near Kiryandongo District claimed the lives of at least 63 people, with many more seriously injured.
The crash occurred around midnight at Kitaleba village, near Asili Farm, and involved:
– Two long-distance passenger buses traveling in opposite directions
– A lorry truck
– A Toyota Land Cruiser
According to police reports, both buses attempted to overtake other vehicles simultaneously, resulting in a fatal head-on collision
Rescue teams, including the Uganda Red Cross, described the crash as one of the most severe in recent memory. Victims were rushed to nearby hospitals, and authorities warned that the death toll could rise due to the severity of injuries.
Initial reports listed 63 fatalities, though later updates revised the number to 46, clarifying that some victims initially presumed dead were found unconscious.
This tragedy has reignited public concern over road safety in Uganda, particularly on high-traffic routes like the Kampala–Gulu highway. Reckless overtaking, poor visibility, and lack of enforcement have been cited as recurring issues.
Authorities have launched a formal investigation and pledged to review transport regulations and driver conduct.
