Tanzania has entered its third consecutive day of nationwide protests, with demonstrators mostly youth flooding the streets to denounce the October 29, 2025 presidential election, which they claim was neither free nor fair.

Protesters argue that the election lacked transparency, citing the arrest and disqualification of major opposition candidates. The situation escalated further after the National Electoral Commission announced that President Samia Suluhu Hassan secured 95% of the vote in Mbeya, a result many view as implausible.

In a televised address, Tanzania’s Chief of Defence Forces, Gen. Jacob John Mkunda, condemned the protests, labeling participants as criminals

“Some individuals took to the streets on October 29 committing criminal acts. These are crimes and must stop.”

Despite the warning, protests have intensified, spreading across multiple cities as demonstrators refuse to back down.

The government has imposed a nationwide internet shutdown, and several media outlets have gone silent. For example, The Citizen, one of Tanzania’s leading newspapers, last published an update on October 29, the day voting began.

This information blackout has made it nearly impossible to verify events on the ground, raising concerns about press freedom and the safety of civilians.

Seif Magango, spokesperson for the UN Human Rights Office, urged Tanzanian security forces to refrain from using excessive force against protesters. Meanwhile, the government has instructed both public and private sector workers to work from home due to the unrest.

President Samia Suluhu Hassan is widely expected to win re-election, while in Zanzibar, CCM candidate Hussein Mwinyi has reportedly secured 80% of the vote. However, opposition groups have rejected the results, alleging widespread fraud and voter suppression.
