Nyeri Governor H.E. Mutahi Kahiga has issued a formal apology to the Kenyan public and to the family of Raila Odinga following widespread outrage over remarks made in a viral video. In a press statement delivered on Wednesday, Kahiga acknowledged the hurt caused and expressed regret for his comments.

He also announced his resignation from the Council of Governors (CoG) with immediate effect, stepping down from his role as Vice Chair.

The backlash erupted after a vernacular video clip surfaced online, showing Kahiga making remarks during a burial ceremony that were widely perceived as celebratory and insensitive regarding Raila Odinga’s death. The video went viral on Tuesday evening, sparking national condemnation.

Political leaders, including ODM Chairperson Gladys Wanga, accused Kahiga of acting as a mouthpiece for Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, further fueling tensions.

The Council of Governors, led by Wajir Governor Ahmed Abdullahi, had called for an emergency meeting to deliberate possible sanctions. Kahiga’s resignation came just hours later, signaling an attempt to de-escalate the situation.

Kenyans online have rallied around the phrase “ENIGMA 001 SHOULD BE RESPECTED”, in reference to Raila Odinga’s legacy.
