Tanzania: Over 37 Million citizens head to the polls in 2025 presidential election
Tanzania holds its 2025 presidential election with high turnout expected. President Samia Suluhu faces 16 challengers.
On the morning of Wednesday, October 29, 2025, Tanzanians woke up to cast their votes in a highly anticipated presidential election. With over 37 million registered voters, including 200,000 Tanzanians living abroad, the country is expecting a strong turnout.
Polling stations opened at 7:00 AM and will close at 4:00 PM, with official results expected within 72 hours.
Incumbent President Samia Suluhu Hassan, representing the ruling party Chama Cha Mapinduzi (CCM), is seeking re-election against 16 opposition candidates, including:
– Kunje Ngombale (AAFP)
– Hassan Almas (NRA)
– Coaster Kibonde (Chama Cha Makini)
– Doyo Hassan Doyo (NLD)
Notably, several prominent opposition figures, including Tundu Lissu of CHADEMA, remain in detention, raising concerns about political freedom and fairness.
The Tanzania National Electoral Commission reported that preparations were complete and voting was proceeding peacefully. The election is being monitored by observers from the East African Community, including Habimana Kizito, Vice President of Rwanda’s National Electoral Commission.
At 65 years old, Samia Suluhu Hassan is Tanzania’s first female president, having assumed office in 2021 following the sudden death of Dr. John Pombe Magufuli, who had just begun his second term.
Her leadership has been marked by efforts to stabilize the economy and re-engage with international partners, but critics point to ongoing restrictions on opposition voices.
