Kagame and Faye join Kigali’s car free day
On Sunday, October 19, 2025, Kigali’s streets came alive with energy and purpose as Rwandan President Paul Kagame and Senegalese President Bassirou Diomaye Faye participated in the city’s signature Car Free Day event.
The two leaders joined thousands of residents in a 5-kilometer walk, reinforcing shared values of public health, environmental stewardship, and regional solidarity.
This joint appearance marked the culmination of President Faye’s official visit to Rwanda, which focused on strengthening bilateral ties and exploring collaborative development strategies.
“This visit ends with a symbol of unity and partnership,” President Faye shared on social media. “I thank President Kagame, his government, and the people of Rwanda for their warm welcome and care.”
What Is Car Free Day?
Launched in May 2016, Car Free Day is a monthly public fitness initiative in Kigali that encourages residents to embrace physical activity and reduce vehicle emissions. Participants gather in designated car-free zones to walk, run, cycle, and receive free health screenings and wellness advice.
The program has expanded beyond Kigali to other provinces, becoming a national movement for preventive health and sustainable urban living.
