Be One Gin owner arrested over harmful alcohol production allegations

Habumugisha Jean Paul, owner of Roots Investment Group and producer of Be One Gin, has been arrested in Rwanda over allegations of manufacturing harmful alcoholic beverages.

Habumugisha Jean Paul, the owner of Roots Investment Group, which produces the popular alcoholic beverage Be One Gin, has been arrested and is currently detained at RIB Rusororo Station, according to the Rwanda Investigation Bureau (RIB).

His arrest reportedly followed the Usalama XI operation, a regional security sweep conducted between October 15–17, 2025.

RIB spokesperson Dr. Murangira B. Thierry confirmed that Habumugisha’s case file has been submitted to the National Public Prosecution Authority (NPPA), which is now gathering evidence for potential court proceedings.

 “He is suspected of producing beverages that may cause death or serious harm to health,” Dr. Murangira told IGIHE.

Habumugisha is being investigated under Article 115 of Rwanda’s Penal Code, which criminalizes the act of knowingly giving someone a substance that can cause illness or impair their ability to work, even if not intended to kill.

If convicted, the penalty includes:

– 2 to 3 years in prison

– A fine between 300,000 and 500,000 Rwandan Francs
