In January 2020, American entrepreneur Jonathan Shafer and his family arrived in Kigali, just months before the world was shaken by the COVID‑19 pandemic. What he didn’t know then was that Rwanda would soon become his second home, transforming both his life and his business.

Six years later, Shafer — the CEO of Fortis Green Holdings — considers Kigali home. His business has flourished, his goals have expanded, and his family is thriving.

Fortis Green Holdings in Africa
Fortis Green Holdings, originally focused on renewable energy solutions, has now expanded into housing development projects. The company currently manages 36 properties across eight African countries.

Shafer’s African journey began in 2008, when he moved to Sierra Leone and spent nearly seven years investing and working in one of West Africa’s most challenging environments.

“That’s where I got the idea to build businesses not just for profit, but to make a difference in people’s lives,” he explained.

Choosing Kigali
After returning to the United States, Shafer and his wife knew they would come back to Africa. Choosing Kigali, he says, was a family decision.

“We wanted a city that would never make us feel discouraged, one with safety, freedom, and access to other African countries. Kigali told us, ‘Come.’”

Today, his wife works at the International School of Kigali (ISK), their children are happy, and the family is building a home in Kibagabaga.

Witnessing Rwanda’s Growth
Arriving just two months before COVID‑19, Shafer experienced Kigali’s lockdown and then watched the city’s economic revival.

“From tourism and sports to infrastructure, what has happened since then is remarkable. It’s an honor to be in Rwanda at this moment in its history.”

Tackling Africa’s Energy Challenge
Through Fortis Green Holdings, Shafer is committed to addressing one of Africa’s biggest challenges: over 600 million people without electricity. His mission is to attract investment from the U.S. to build sustainable energy infrastructure that benefits both the economy and communities.

He praises Rwanda’s investment climate:

“Rwanda offers everything. Institutions are strong, laws are respected, and agencies like REG, EUCL, MININFRA, and RDB work with dedication and partnership.”

Fortis Green Projects in Rwanda
Fortis Green currently operates three major energy projects in Rwanda: Agahozo Shalom Solar Plant (8.5 MW), Rwaza Hydropower Plant near Musanze and  new project in Nyamasheke District.

Jonathan Shafer’s story reflects Rwanda’s growing reputation as a hub for innovation, investment, and sustainable development, a place where global entrepreneurs can build businesses while finding a true home.
