The City of Kigali has announced plans to install dedicated traffic lights for buses and high-capacity vehicles in the coming days. This initiative is designed to reduce congestion on the city’s busy roads and ensure faster, more efficient public transport.
According to the city’s spokesperson, the move is part of a broader strategy to strengthen mass transit systems and discourage reliance on private cars and motorcycles. By giving buses priority at intersections, passengers will reach their destinations more quickly, while easing traffic flow across the capital.
This development follows other government measures to improve public transport. The Rwanda Utilities Regulatory Authority (RURA) recently confirmed that Ecofleet Solutions Ltd, a state-owned company, will begin operating public transport services this month. Unlike private operators who often delay departures until buses are full, Ecofleet will focus on efficiency and timely service.
Prime Minister Dr. Justin Nsengiyumva also highlighted Rwanda’s five-year infrastructure plan (2024–2029), which includes building 300 kilometers of national roads to further ease mobility. Currently, Rwanda has more than 56,000 motorcycles used for public transport and over 450 buses operated by 13 companies in Kigali.
The introduction of bus-priority traffic lights is expected to be a game-changer for urban mobility, reinforcing Kigali’s vision of a modern, sustainable transport system.
