FDLR commander “Tokyo” captured by AFC/M23 in Masisi
AFC/M23 forces have captured one of the most feared figures in the FDLR rebel movement. Tokyo, real name Yoweri, originally from Kivuye, Western Rwanda. The arrest took place in Muzimu (translated as “Ghost”), a remote area in Masisi, North Kivu, during a strategic operation.
Tokyo is accused of leading and participating in atrocities including rape, murder, and the burning of villages, alongside other notorious figures such as Jean-Marie of Nyatura, Tiger, and Ignace Dunia.
Despite Tokyo being wounded in the leg, AFC/M23 forces reportedly treated and evacuated him safely, showcasing a level of professionalism and restraint rarely seen in such high-stakes operations.
This act of humanity stands in stark contrast to the crimes Tokyo is believed to have committed, including leaving behind thousands of orphans and victims of sexual violence.
AFC/M23 reiterated that in territories under their control, groups like the FDLR and other armed factions have no chance. The movement emphasized that civilian protection remains its top priority, and that operations are conducted with discipline and strategic intent.
This capture is being viewed as one of the most significant blows to the FDLR leadership in recent years.
