Instagram has officially rolled out its new Reposts feature worldwide, enabling users to share public Reels and feed posts from other accounts directly into their own followers’ feeds. The update, announced via Meta’s newsroom, aims to boost interaction and content discovery by making it easier to share and credit creators.

Similar to TikTok’s repost tool and X’s retweet function, the feature automatically attributes the original creator while ensuring all likes, comments, and shares remain linked to the source. Reposted content appears in followers’ feeds and in a dedicated “Reposts” tab on the sharer’s profile, creating a personal archive of shared material. Users can also add short notes to their reposts for context.

Initially introduced in the U.S., the feature is now being expanded globally alongside other updates, including location sharing through a new Map tool and enhancements to the “Friends” tab in Reels. The changes are part of Instagram’s strategy to increase friend-to-friend engagement, following internal data showing that only 7% of activity involved content from friends.

For Rwandan users, Reposts could amplify local voices — from football highlights and cultural celebrations to community campaigns. Content creators stand to gain from broader organic reach as followers share their posts, potentially growing audiences without paid promotion.

However, Instagram faces criticism for its repeated adoption of features from rivals, from Snapchat-inspired Stories to TikTok-style Reels, and now Reposts. Analysts suggest this raises questions about the platform’s innovation strategy versus its push for feature parity.

As Reposts takes root globally, its success will hinge on user adoption and its ability to strengthen community connections both locally and internationally.
